Biography

Kurt Rydl – the voice of the greatest opera houses – the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Paris Opera, the Covent Garden, was in Sofia in 2022 at the special invitation of Acad. Plamen Kartaloff to take part in the new project of the Sofia Opera – "Der fliegende Holländer" by Richard Wagner.

In 2022 the renowned bass held a masterclass with the soloists of the ensemble for the forthcoming premiere, which opened the Summer Festival "Muses of Water" at Lake Pancharevo.

Kurt Rydl has played over 100 roles in German, English, Italian, French, Russian and Czech operas, and his concert programmes range from Mozart to Penderecki and from Beethoven to Mahler. He has participated in festivals in Bayreuth, Bregenz, Edinburgh, Munich, Salzburg and Verona. Since 1999 he has been an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera with the title "Kammersänger". He was also nominated for a Grammy (1987).

The Bulgarian audience remembers his famous appearance as Rocco in the Sofia Opera's production of "Fidelio" (2013).

Kurt Rydl has numerous opera and concert recordings (CD, DVD, Blu ray) under Celibidache, Dohnanyi, Haitink, Haenchen, Karajan, Levine, Maazel, Metha, Muti, Sinopoli, Stein, and others.
