Biography

Kab-gun Chung Intendant & Artistic Director of Daegu Opera House

Kab-gun Chung is a Korean Director who currently serves as the Intendant and Artistic Director of Daegu Opera House. He join the theatre in April 2021.

Chung studied vocal at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea and after that, he gained valuable work experience at the renowned La Scala Theater in Milan. Additionally, he also studied Stage Direction at Accademia d'Arte Drammatica. Prior to joining Daegu Opera House, he was the Director of National Changgeuk Company of Korea and Gwangju Metropolitan Opera.

Additionally, he has taught at the Korean National University of Arts, Chung
-Ang University and Yeongnam University.

Chung has made a significant impact on the Korean Opera scene with his exceptional works. With over 30 years of experience, he has directed a remarkable 145 performances, including notable productions such as , , , , , ütz>, , ,, and <L'elisir d'amore>. His directing were recognised as internationally in 2005 when he was invited to direct at the prestigious Torre del Largo, Puccini Festival, making him the first Asian Director to receive such  an invitation. The production was highly acclaimed by both international critics and audiences.

Chung presently holds the position of Intendant at Daegu Opera House, which he has been serving since December 2022. As the Intendant, he plays a dual role as the Artistic and Administrative representative of Daegu Opera House, while also serving as the chairperson of the Daegu and Gyeongbuk province branch of the Korean Culture and Arts Centers Association.
