Svetozar Donev

Biography

Svetozar Donev graduated in directing at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theater and Film Arts and then specialized in London, Moscow and Paris. He is a professor of acting and opera directing at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music. Svetozar Donev has staged over 250 productions in all Bulgarian opera houses. With great success he has staged the operas "Boris Godunov", "Falstaff", "La forza del destino", "Tosca", "Lud Guidiya", "Entfürung aus dem Serail", "Maria Desislava", "Khan Krum Yuvigi", "Carmen" and others at the Sofia Opera. He has staged more than 80 operettas and musicals at the Stefan Makedonski State Music Theatre.

As guest director and producer prof. Donev has staged in the Czech Republic, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine "Così fan tutte", "Lucia di Lammermoor", "La Favorite", "Don Pasquale", "La Traviata", "Rigoletto", "Cyrano de Bergerac".

Prof. Donev has been a jury member at international singing competitions in Sofia, Miami Beach, Barcelona, Bilbao, Pamplona, Verviers, Geneva, etc.

From 1960 to 1978 and from 1996 to 2009 he was the Chief director and director of the Stefan Makedonski State Music Theatre. From 1978 to 1981 he was Deputy Director General of the Theatre and Music Department at the Ministry of Culture, and from 1981 to 1990 Prof. Svetozar Donev was the director of the Sofia Opera. He was Deputy Chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Artists and Chairman of the Creative Fund for two terms.

For outstanding services to Bulgarian music, theatre and dance culture prof. Donev was awarded the highest Stara Planina state order 1st degree.
