Biography

In 2000 he graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory "P. I. Tchaikovsky" with a degree in "Choral Conducting" (in the class of Professor Boris Tevlin) and "Opera and Symphonic Conducting" (in the class of Professor Mark Ermler). In 1999, when he was a fourth-year student, he became a probationer-conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre. In 2002 he completed his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatoire. Since 2009 he has been a lecturer at the Moscow State Conservatory.

In 2001, after a tour with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra in the USA, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, then Artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre, invited him to become a full-time conductor. Subsequently, more than forty works were performed at the Bolshoi Theatre under his direction, including the opera "Prince Igor" by A. Borodin, "Snow Maiden", "The Tsar's Bride" and "The Golden Cockerel" by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, "Iolanta" and "Eugene Onegin" by P. Tchaikovsky, "La Traviata" by G. Verdi, "La bohème" and "Tosca" by G. Puccini, "The Fiery Angel" by S. Prokofiev.

His repertoire also includes practically all the ballets that have appeared on the Bolshoi Theatre stage in the last twenty years, including "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker" by P. Tchaikovsky, "Raymonda" by A. Glazunov, "The Golden Age", "The Bolt" and "The Bright Stream" by D. Shostakovich, "Romeo and Juliet" by S. Prokofiev and "Ivan the Terrible" to music by S. Prokofiev, ballets to music by J. Bizet, L. van Beethoven, G. Mahler, W.A. Mozart and other composers.

Under his direction at the Bolshoi Theatre took place the premieres of twelve ballet spectacles, the most recent being "Le sacre du printemps" by I. Stravinsky (2013), "Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge" to music by B. Britten, "Symphony of Psalms" to music by I. Stravinsky, "Undine" by H.W. Henze and "The Golden Age" by D. Shostakovich (all in 2016).

With the Bolshoi Theatre Opera, Ballet and Orchestra, the maestro has appeared on many celebrated theatre stages and concert podiums, including Milan's La Scala Theatre, New York's Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Theatre Covent Garden, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C., USA), the Paris National Opera (Palais Garnier), the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bunka Kaikan (Tokyo) and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

During the Bolshoi's tours, he collaborated with the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Royal Theatre of Turin (Teatro Regio di Torino), the National Symphony Orchestra of the Kennedy Center, the Orchestra of the Royal Theatre of Parma (Teatro Regio di Parma), The Colonne Orchestra (Paris) and many others. He has performed with the Santa Cecilia National Academy Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Academy Orchestra of the West (California), and the St. Petersburg, Saratov, and Rostov-on-Don Academic Orchestras.

From 2004 to 2008 he collaborated with Elena Obraztsova and the competition for young opera singers she founded.

In the 2005/07 season he was the principal guest conductor of the Universal Ballet Company in South Korea.

From 2010 to 2015 he was the chief conductor of the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet. During his work at this theatre, he appeared as a conductor-director of opera and ballet spectacles, including "The Tsar's Bride" by N. Rimsky-Korsakov, "The Love for the Three Oranges" by S. Prokofiev, " Le comte Ory " by J. S. Rossini, "Otello" and "Rigoletto" by G. Verdi, "Amore Buffo" to music by G. Donizetti, "Tsvetodelika" to music by P. Tchaikovsky, A. Pärt and Fr. Poulenc. Almost every work of his at the Ekaterinburg Opera and Ballet has been noted for nomination for the national theatre Golden Mask Award.

Since the 2014/2015 season he has been a guest conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg.

His recordings include: a CD with the Bolshoi Theatre Chamber Orchestra (Universal Music Group), a DVD "Spartacus" (ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre, The Colonne Orchestra, Decca, Paris).

AWARDS
In 2014, he won the Golden Mask Award in the nomination for "Best Ballet Conductor" for the spectacle "Cantus Arcticus" ("Songs of the Arctic") to music by E. Rautavaara.

In 2015, he was awarded the Golden Mask in the same nomination for the spectacle "Tsvetodelika".

In the 2015/2016 season, three works with him as conductor were nominated for the Golden Mask Award: "Romeo and Juliet" (Ekaterinburg Opera and Ballet), "Undine" and "Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge" (Bolshoi Theatre).

In 2017, he won the Golden Mask Award in the nomination for "Best Ballet Conductor" for the performance of "Undine" by H.W. Henze.
