Biography

Italian baritone Claudio Sgura is one of today’s leading baritones in the Verdian, Puccinian, and verismo repertoire. Born in Puglia, he began studying singing in Lecce with soprano Maria Mazzotta. Among the winners of the prestigious “Voci Verdiane” opera competition in Busseto in 2006, he made his debut the following year at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly under the musical direction of Myung-Whun Chung.

Since then, he has performed at prestigious international houses such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera in New York, Vienna Staatsoper, Paris Opéra, Bavarian State Opera, Sydney Opera House (Otello), New National Theatre Tokyo, ABAO Bilbao, Festival La Coruña, Palm Beach Opera, and the Savonlinna Festival. He regularly performs in leading Italian theaters, such as La Scala in Milan, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Teatro Regio in Parma, Macerata Opera Festival, and Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.

Among 2024/25 season’s engagements: Simon Boccanegra at Opera di Roma, La Fanciulla del West at Teatro Comunale in Bologna and Hamburg, Tosca at Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

Highlights of recent seasons include Andrea Chénier in Monte Carlo and Adriana Lecouvreur at the Teatro Regio in Parma, and his debut as Renato in Un ballo in maschera at the Den Norske Opera & Ballet in Oslo. He also performed Scarpia in Tosca in Norway and Hong Kong, he appeared in the world premiere of Edith at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, La fanciulla del West in Munich, Vienna and Lyon as well as Manon Lescaut in Bologna, Le Villi and Messa di Gloria in Liege.
