Born in Avelino in 1982, Ciampa graduated at the “Santa Cecilia” conservatory in Rome, majoring in conducting. He continued his education at prestigious national and international academies and schools under the authoritative guidance of Carlo Maria Giulini and Bruno Aprea. He’s worked as Antonio Papano and Daniel Oren’s assistant. Among the many orchestras he’s conducted are the Munich philharmonic, the “Toscanini” philharmonic in Parma, the Salerno philharmonic, the orchestra of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Giovanile Italiana orchestra, the Paris Opéra Bastille orchestra, „I pomeriggi Musicali”, the Deutsche Oper Berlin orchestra, the “Santa Cecilia” Conservatory orchestra, “I Solisti di Napoli”, the Valencia symphony orchestra and the Barcelona symphony orchestra.
Ciampa conducts big Italian and international productions including “La Traviata” by Verdi at the Paris Opéra Bastille (with a DVD edition in 2014), at the “La Fenice” theater in Venice and at the “Regio” theater in Torino; “Nabucco” by Verdi at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Tel Aviv; “Love Elixir” by Donizetti at the “Colon” theater in Buenos Aires; “Rigoletto” by Verdi and “Madama Butterfly” by Puccini in Ancona and “Attila” by Verdi in Bilbao.
In recent years, he’s been a distinguished figure at Italian festivals dedicated to Puccini and Verdi: at Tore del Lago with “Turandot” and “Madama Butterfly”; at Parma with “Le Corsaire”, “I masnadieri” and “Nabucco”. He regularly cooperates with the biggest names in international opera including Leo Nucci in Piacenza with the applauded productions of “MacBeth” and “Simon Boccanegra” and Diana Damrau in Paris, Barcelona, Genua and Munich. He recently conducted “La Wally” by Catalani in Modena, Piacenza and Ravena; “La Traviata” in Palermo, Salerno, Venice and Tokio on a tour with the Palermo opera; “Rigoletto” in Genua and Parma; “The Barber of Seville” by Rossini in Las Palmas and Venice; “Maria Stuarda” by Donizetti in Berlin; “Nabucco” and “Norma” by Bellini in Naples and Parma; “Jerusalem” by Verdi in Bilbao; “Il Trovatore” by Verdi in Munich; “Un ballo in Maschera” by Verdi in Seville. During the 2022/23 season he conducted several productions in big international theaters including “Il Trovatore” in the “La Fenice” theater in Venice, “Madama Butterfly” at the “Verdi” theater in Salerno, “Turandot” and “Don Pasquale” by Donizetti at the Hamburg national opera, “Otello” by Verdi at the “Verdi” theater in Triest, “La Traviata” at the Zurich opera, “Fedora” by Giordano at the “Peres Galdos” theater in Las Palmas and “Adriana Lecouvreur” by Cilea at the “Regio” theater in Parma. His engagements for the 2023/24 season include “Otello” at the Bavarian national opera in Munich; “Don Pasquale” and “Love Elixir” at the Vienna national opera; “La fanciulla del West” by Puccini at the “Regio” theater in Torino and “Anne Boleyn” by Donizetti at the “Verdi” theater in Triest. He returned to Teatro Regio in Parma for “Il Trovatore” and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for “Madama Butterfly”. He has received many awards and recognitions including the National arts award in 2010-2011 and the first prize at the National conducting contest by the Ministry of education, universities and scientific research. He debuted at Teatro Filarmonico di Verona in 2016 at the Easter concert; in 2017, he conducted “Norma” by Bellini and in 2018: “Manon Lescaut” and “La Boheme” by Puccini. He returned for the artistic season of 2021 to conduct the first performance of the Symphonic season and “The Barber of Seville” for the Opera season. He debuted at Arena di Verona in 2018 conducting “Carmen” by Bizet and “Turandot” by Puccini and returned in 2019 to conduct “Aida”. For the Summer festival of 2020, he conducted the second part of the “Italian Heart of Music” concert and the premiere of “Gianni Schicchi” by Puccini at Arena Arena. In 2021, he returned with “La Traviata” and “Turandot”: he conducted the latter at the 99th Opera festival in 2022. He returned for the 100th Opera festival in 2023 to conduct “Tosca” by Puccini. He’s among the conductors at the celebratory event “Great Italian opera: World Legacy”, at the opening night of the 101st Opera festival in Arena di Verona in 2024. For the 102th Opera festival at Arena di Verona, he conducted “Carmen” by Bizet, directed by Franko Zeffirelli.
