Biography

Boris Spasov graduated orchestra conducting from the Bulgarian State Conservatoire in the class of Prof. Vladi Simeonov. He specialized by Mark Ermler at the Bolshoi Theatre and took part in the conducting master class of Witold Rovitzki in Vienna.

In 2005, he specialized again in Vienna under the direction of Riccardo Muti – the subject was Mozart’s opera “Die Zauberflöte”. 

Boris Spasov made his debut at the conductor’s stand still at the age of 23 – he conducted Mozart and Beethoven. His first opera spectacle was again an opera by Mozart – “Cosi fan tutte” on the Sofia stage. 

After his graduation, he was appointed as conductor at the Ruse Philharmonic, and since 1988 he has been conductor at the Sofia Opera and Ballet.

He is professor at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music and at the New Bulgarian University.

In his rich repertoire there are operas, ballets, symphonic and chamber opuses from the world classic, as well as many operettas and musicals. He has been guest-conductor many times in Italy, Germany, Egypt, Macedonia, Taiwan, Spain, Columbia, Japan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania. He has made recordings for prestigious music companies abroad and in Bulgaria – Pentagon, Capriccio, Concord, Balkanton, Mega, the Bulgarian National Radio.

He made an orchestration of Shubert’s unfinished Symphony No. 7 in E major, the first performance of which in Bulgaria was on 13 December 1978. 

In 2003, was made a studio recording of this symphony by the Bulgarian National Radio in a new revision.

His repertoire includes Parashkev Hadjiev’s operas “A Madcap” and “ Star Without a Name”, Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”, Verdi’s “Aida”, Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas”, Donizetti’s “Rita”, almost all staged operas for children by Alexander Yossifov, “The Island of Dreams” – a musical by Robert Scholz, Imre Kálmán’s operetta “Die Csárdásfürstin” and others. Boris Spasov has an impressive list of ballet titles and hundreds of conducted ballet spectacles: “Don Quixote”, “Giselle”, “La sylphide”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Notre Dame de Paris”, “Pulcinella”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake”, “The Nutcracker”, “The Fire-Dancer”, “The Crusaders”, “La fille mal guardée” and many others.
