Aleksandar Denić (born 1963 in Belgrade) is a Serbian visual artist, scenographer, stage designer and film production designer.
Aleksandar Denic was born on 31 October 1963 in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia. He is a production designer and set decorator, known for Chernobyl Diaries (2012), Byzantine Blue (1993) and Underground (1995).
Aleksandar Denić graduated from Applied Arts Academy department of Film and Set Design at University of Belgrade. Since 1987 he has been working on numerous theatre and film productions all over the world, among the others on Emir Kusturicas Underground (1995). He has received different awards for theatre, film and architecture – among others nomination for Emmy Award 1996. Nominated for Best Designer at International Opera Awards 2014. In the same year, he was honoured by the German journals Opernwelt and Theater heute as "Stage designer of the year" and he received the German theatre award DER FAUST. Since 2010 professor for film, TV and stage design at Faculty of Art and Design in Belgrade. He is co-founder of Serbian Film Commission and since 2011 member of National Cultural Council of Serbia. Has been working with Frank Castorf in Paris, Zürich, Berlin, Munich and Hamburg.
Aleksandar Denic, set designer, the author of a large number of theatre and film set designes both in this country and abroad. He worked with a number of famous domestic and foreign directors such as Arnold Barkus, Michael Basset, Srdjan Dragojevic, Uli Edel, Srdjan Karanovic, Emir Kusturica, Tanja Mandic Rigonat, Dragan Marinkovic, Goran Markovic, Darjan Mihajlovic, Dejan Mijac, Mikele Merola, Stefan Sablic, Branislav Micunovic, Jug Radivojevic, Miloš Radovic, Michael Rouds, Slavenko Saletovic, Alisa Stojanovic, John Skovel, Gorcin Stojanovic, Radmila Vojvodic and others. He directed stage cantata Atlas by Anja Djordjevic in Yugoslav Drama Theatre. Among numerous acknowledgements and awards, he won Great Award of Serbia, nomination for Ammy Award, Golden Knight, Crystal Prism, Golden Mimosa and Golden Turkey, are outstanding.

Prominent Serbian stage and set designer Aleksandar Denić became a member of the prestigious Academy of Arts in Berlin, which gathers the most important members who have made a great contribution to the field of art. Denić is the first artist from the Balkans to receive such honor at this prestigious German cultural institution.
Aleksandar Denić is an artist whose spectacular and ingenious set and stage designs are ranked among the best according to critics. He is the winner of numerous prestigious awards, including the “Faust”, the German national theater award. Denić was declared the best set designer of the year several times, and according to the survey of the respected magazine “Theater heute”, he was twice chosen as the best set designer in the German-speaking area. Aleksandar Denić was particularly distinguished by his work on the cycle “Ring of the Nibelungen” directed by Frank Castorf for which he won the “Theater heute’s” poll as the “Set designer of the year”. Now his work receives another significant confirmation through membership in the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
At the Berlin Academy, Aleksandar Denić found himself among the members of the performing arts, which includes all those who participate in the creation of theatrical, musical or film work. What is interesting is that this academy separated science from art more than a hundred years ago. The election of new members of the academy is a recognition of their outstanding contribution to art and culture. As stated in the official announcement, the elections were held at the 62nd Assembly (May 24-26, 2024) in Berlin.
Currently, the Academy of Arts has 435 members in its six art sections, among them Ai Weiwei, Bob Dylan, Renzo Piano, Lord Norman Foster, Herta Müller, Wim Wenders, Richard Deacon… The Akademie der Künste was founded in 1696 and is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Europe.
Let us remind you that Aleksandar Denić is this year’s representative of Serbia at the 60th International Biennale of Art in Venice with the work “Exposition Coloniale”, which attracts a large number of visitors to our pavilion in Giardini, and the famous Le Monde, Guardian, Vogue and Artribune magazines included him in the must see pavilions and into the shortlist selection.
