The musical tells the story of Maria who accepts a job as a nanny in a big family while she decides whether to become a nun or not. She falls in love with the children she looks after and, in the end, in captain von Trapp: their widowed father.

Von Trapp is ordered to serve in the German navy but he opposes the nazis. Captain von Trapp and Maria decide to flee Austria and take the children with them. Many songs in this musical have become hits, including "Do-Re-Mi", "My Favorite Things", "Edelweiss", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" as well as the title song “The Sound of Music”.
