The Sofia Opera presents on January 9 the Bulgarian premiere of the famous Broadway musical “The Sound of Music”

A dream that will need all the love you can give

Every day of your life

A charming fairy tale that will not leave anyone indifferent, that will bring festive mood and will turn the first days of the new year into a real family holiday.

The first premiere of the new year is one of the most award-winning musicals, telling the fascinating story of the singers of the Trapp family. Reimagined by the creative inspiration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the family story is produced by a global team.

After the success of the musical “Shrek”, director West Hyler again works with the singers. Intensive rehearsals are already underway in the opera halls. Conductors are Igor Bogdanov and Svetoslav Lazarov. Set design is by Jeremy Barnett and costumes by Whitney Locker. For this production again, the artistic lighting is by Zach Blane.

The audience's favorite performer Vesela Delcheva will be Maria, who will make Captain von Trapp's children sing, and the naughty little ones are from Dimitar Kostanzaliev's Children's Vocal and Dance Formation “Talasamche”. Alexander Georgiev was hired for the role of Captain von Trapp himself. Nuns, Mother Abbess, baronesses, a baron, an admiral, a postman and other pre-WWII figures are among the characters. Alexandrina Stoyanova-Andreeva, Silvana Pravcheva, Mariana Zvetkova, Diana Dimitrova, Rada Toteva, Tsveta Sarambelieva, Nikolay Pavlov, Nikolay Voynov, Anton Radev, Plamen Granzhan are in the main roles. The choreography is by Riolina Topalova.

The world premiere of “The Sound of Music” was in 1959. In three years, 1,443 performances were played. It had nine Tony Award nominations, winning five in the following categories: Best Musical, Best Actress for Mary Martin, Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Neway, Best Set Designer and Best Conductor and music director for Frederick Dvonch. In the same year, 1960, it also won the Grammy for Best Recorded Album in the Musical category.

The first West End, London production was in 1961. The 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The last work of the creative tandem Rodgers & Hammerstein was inspired by the true story described by Maria von Trapp in the book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers”, which was made into a West German film in 1956.

The songs from the musical are universal hits. Among them, undoubtedly the most popular are “Do-Re-Mi”, “Edelweiss”, the title track “The Sound of Music”, “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Ev'ry Mountain”.

At the Sofia Opera, the musical is performed in Bulgarian with subtitles in Bulgarian and in English.

Let's be together in the New Year, because we have more unforgettable meetings ahead of us and, as Maria sings, our hearts will be blessed with the sound of music.
