The Sofia Opera and Ballet will present for the second time its performance to the world audience through the OperaVision platform

After the exceptional success of the broadcast of “Boris Godunov” by Mussorgsky in the summer of 2020, the Sofia Opera will show another performance from its rich repertoire. This is unlikely to surprise music lovers – for years the Sofia Opera has been an emblem of Bulgarian culture far beyond the borders of Bulgaria. Bulgarian opera singers have been known and applauded all over the world since the beginning of the 20th century. The tradition continues fervently today.

On March 19, 19:00 Central European Time, spectators from all over the world will be able to watch the online broadcast of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Attila”. Plamen Kartaloff’s impressive production at the historic Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo was realized in 2011. The performance was attended by hundreds of connoisseurs of opera, not only from Bulgaria but also from abroad.

Plamen Kartaloff chose Tsarevets as the stage for his monumental outdoor productions more than 30 years ago. With the realization of the operas “Ivaylo” by Marin Goleminov, “Tsar Kaloyan” by Pancho Vladigerov and later “Attila” by Verdi, the director proves his exceptional mastery of telling stories in the open air. Moreover, in the libretto of the two Bulgarian operas we find a historical connection with the place of action, namely – Veliko Tarnovo. The far-sighted vision of cultural tourism is very clear, which later became apparent in a number of other projects by Plamen Kartaloff, among which is Wagner’s tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung”.

The multi-million audience on the OperaVision platform will see an entirely Bulgarian soloist cast performing “Attila”. Attila’s role was recreated by world-renowned bass Orlin Anastasov, who debuted in it at Covent Garden, London in 2002, when he was just 26 years old. Two weeks before the production in Veliko Tarnovo, Anastasov performed the same role in La Scala, Milan.

Radostina Nikolaeva (Odabella), Ventseslav Anastasov (Ezio), Daniel Damyanov (Foresto), Dimitar Stanchev (Leone) and Plamen Papazikov (Uldino) take part in this memorable masterpiece.

The conductor of the production is Alessandro Sangiorgi, the scenography is by Boris Stoynov, and the costumes by Lyubomir Yordanov. With the orchestra and chorus of the Sofia Opera and Ballet.
