THE STORY OF THE LITTLE BABAR ELEPHANT
Francis Poulenc wrote in 1945 “The Story of the Little Babar Elephant” after Jean de Brunhoff’s book.

The story tells about a little elephant, which was born in the Big Forest. One day, a hunter killed Babar’s mother and he, frightened, escaped. He found himself in a big city. There he got acknowledged with the Old Lady, who liked very much doing goodness.

They became very good friends. Sometimes Babar got sad, because he remembered the Big Forest and his mother.

Two years passed away. One day Babar met his cousins Arthur and Celeste. He decided to leave the city and return in the Bog Forest.

And this time in it happened an unusual event. The Old King, while walking, ate a toadstool. He got ill and died. The old elephants gathered to select a new king.

Exactly in this moment appeared Babar, Arthur and Celeste. The wisest elephant, Cornelius, proposed Babar to be the new king, because he has lived among people and has learned a lot from them. Babar accepted the proposal by clarifying that during his travel he and Celeste became engaged. The elephants chose Babar and Celeste for king and queen.

All animals from the Big Forest celebrated the coronation and the wedding of Babar and Celeste.

The composer is Francis Poulenc, and author of the story of the Elephant is Jean de Brunhoff.
