Under the night sky at the iconic “St. Alexander Nevsky” square, the “Opera at the Square” festival has been going on for several days now.
“A literal recreation of the performances’ natural environment is already a fact. “Opera at the Square” is opera for everyone. What’s more, after the end of the Wagner festival which has long since been on the world opera map, the Sofia Opera has entered the open stage part of its season, with its performances at the square and at Pancharevo Lake”, prof. Plamen Kartaloff explained.
In his words, the stage was especially built for these open stage performances. “It’s about 25 meters long and 50 meters wide”.
The decors were manufactured in Italy.
“I dare say that for three evenings in a row, our audience has watched our hugely successful performances and all seats have been sold out”, he noted.
“We have two more performances on the 15th and 17th of July: “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci”, with a different ensemble and conductor: Daniel Oren, three world-famous singers as well as our wonderful Bulgarian lead singers”, Kartaloff added.
“Then, we have four performances of “Mamma Mia!”. This is the last time we’ll be setting these hit performances”, he said.
“It’s exactly at “St. Alexander Nevsky” square that we pay tribute to “The Hermit of Rila”: St. John of Rila. We’ll close the festival with an anniversary performance of “Turandot” by Puccini”, Kartaloff added.
Tonight, dress rehearsals with the ensemble will take place, with performances on the 15th and 16th of July.
