The Croatian choreographer produces a ballet version of “Pride and Prejudice”

Opera and ballet are arts of ability, of skill. That is why every ballet dancer can perform the roles of Timothée Hal Chalamet but Timothee cannot perform as any ballet dancer because he lacks specific skills. This is what the Croatian choreographer and director Leo Mujic said regarding the American cinema star’s comments; during a discussion at the Texas University two weeks prior, the actor stated opera and ballet are dying arts and that no one cares about them.

Mujic is in Sofia regarding the preparations for the performance of the ballet “Pride and Prejudice” based on Jane Austen’s novel: the premiere will take on the 21st of March at the Sofia Opera and Ballet. Tickets sold out in February even though four further performances will also take place.

This is the second (so far) worldwide attempt to turn the popular British novel into a ballet. The first attempt happened in 2017 when choreographer Douglas Martin produced a ballet adaption of the work at Princeton together with the American Repertory Ballet troupe.

Even though the novel was written in 1813, “Pride and Prejudice” has been experiencing a true renaissance lately. Recently, “Netflix” stated it would release a new six-part adaptation of the novel starring Ema Corrin and Jack Lowden in the main roles. Last year, BBC aired a new series based on the novel and titled “The Other Bennet Sister”; recently, rumors of a full-length US film with a budget of fifty million dollars appeared which promises a “progressive” take on the story of the five Bennet sisters.
