On May 6, at 7 pm, through the Eventim Stream platform, opera fans will be able to watch online “La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli with Ghena Dimitrova in the lead role.
In 1999, director Plamen Kartaloff assembled a first-class cast for the premiere of La Gioconda. Ghena Dimitrova's partners are Nicola Ghiuselev, Stefka Mineva, Zhivko Pranchev, Rumen Doykov, Elena Chavdarova. Georgi Notev conducts the orchestra, chorus and ballet of the Sofia Opera. Salvatore Russo’s costumes and Flavio Donati’s choreography add unusual aesthetic touches, and Plamen Kartaloff's directing turns the show into a production of an extremely high European level.
One of the greatest opera singers of all time – Ghena Dimitrova – performs the part of the La Gioconda. After her debut on the Sofia stage in 1967 as Abigail in Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco, Ghena Dimitrova carefully began to build her career. As she conquered all the big stages and theatres, she was talked about as a “phenomenon” in the music world. She met the greatest singers, conductors and directors at the time and they never spared superlatives for her. Turandot, Abigail, Lady Macbeth, La Gioconda and Tosca of Ghena Dimitrova remain unsurpassed. Her voice is beautiful and powerful, her singing technique is impressive, her mastery is remarkable. Ghena is adored by audiences around the world, but in Bulgaria she is especially revered and loved.
In this exciting production, the brilliant tenor Rumen Doykov, who celebrates his 70th birthday on May 1st, portrays Enzo Grimaldi. For many years Rumen Doykov has been a leading tenor of the Sofia Opera and through his beautiful voice he demonstrates his singing and stage talent. He has toured with constant success on his own and as a soloist of the Sofia Opera in Europe, the USA and South America and has always been warmly applauded by the audience. Rumen Doykov has over 1000 performances in his career, of which over 200 are in “Aida”.
“La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli was written in the style of the French grand opera and remains the composer’s most famous work. The work becomes a kind of bridge between Verdi’s dramatic operas and Puccini’s verism. 145 years after the first performance, Ponchielli’s music continues to excite audiences.
