Magnus was born and raised in Copenhagen. His interest towards singing and opera sparked when a high school friend of his plays a recording of “La Boheme” by Puccini”. “An entire new and exciting world revealed itself before me and I have been enchanted by it ever since”, the tenor shares.
Magnus graduated from the Royal Danish music academy and shares that many great professors have influenced his understanding of singing and his technique. One of his biggest inspirations was him meeting prof. Douglas Yates in 2001. The latter helped Magnus find his own voice and their collaborative work laid the foundations of his singing talent today.
Magnus Vigilius’ singing career takes him all around the world. As a lead singer, he started off in the UK in 2003 where he worked for several years. After that, he returned to Denmark where he performed on the stages of the Danish national opera, the Royal Danish opera, the Den Ny Opera and the Fun Opera.
A great dream of his came true in 2008 when debuted in the role of Rodolfo in “La Boheme”: the very first opera he had heard. The roles of Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Cavaradossi (Tosca) and Don Jose (Carmen) followed.
Throughout these years, Magnus successfully combined his opera career with that of an artist in a series of successful musical productions such as “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Evita” and “My Fair Lady”.
After winning second place and the Orchestra’s choice award at the “Laurits Melchior” International singing contest, Magnus decided to dedicate himself entirely to opera singing. He began working together with Elena Batukova Kerl and Torsten Kerl who help him delve deep into Richard Wagner’s works and he soon debuted in a Wagner opera.
Magnus’ first Wagner role was that of Erik in “The Flying Dutchman”, at Opera på Skäret. A year later, in 2017, he also performed as Siegmund in “Die Walküre” at the Den Ny Opera in Esberg and won the prestigious “Reumert” Danish theatrical award for the role and was pronounced singer of the year for 2018.
Siegmund turned into his signature role which he performs at Opera Zurich, Theatre Kil, Theater San Carlo (Naples), the Finnish national opera, Helsinki, Opera Leipzig.
Magnus debuted at the Bayreuth festival in 2021 as Water von der Vogelweide in “Tannhäuser” and became the first Danish tenor to perform in Bayreuth, more than thirty years after the famous Paul Elming. The role of Walter von Stolzing in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” took him to the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. At the start of the current season, he debuted at the “La Monne” Royal theater in Brussels as Siegfried: the role we will see him in here, in Sofia, on the 1st of July.
