On the 11th of July, 21:00, at the “St. Alexander Nevsky” cathedral square, the Sofia Opera and Ballet festival “Opera at the Square” will open. This initiative is brought to you with the support of the Sofia municipality, part of the Cultural events calendar, under the patronage of Sofia mayor Vasil Terziev.

On the 11th, 12th and 13th of July, viewers will be able to see the “The Hermit of Rila” musical poem by Father Kiril Popov.

The performances are dedicated to the 1160th anniversary of the Bulgarian nation’s christening. In 1937, Tihomir Pavlov: Bulgarian public figure, writer and poet (1880-1937) creates and publishes “The Hermit of Rila”, his last poetic work which depicts the life of the all-Bulgarian saint, the Holy Blessed John of Rila.

In the span of three days, all Sofia viewers and guests will be able to enjoy the “The Hermit of Rila” musical poem by Father Kiril Popov. Actor Dobrin Dosev will debut in this performance.

On the 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th and 31st of July and on the 1st and 2nd of August, at 20:00, viewers will be able to enjoy “Les Misérables”: the most performed musical of all times. The legendary saga with score by Claude-Michel Schönberg, libretto and adaption by Alain Boublil recreates the French revolution during the time of yet another transformation in the country’s rule as described in the classic novel by Victor Hugo.

In order to depict the touching story of prisoner Jean Valjean, Cosette, Gavroche, Thenardier and all other protagonists, director Plamen Kartaloff chose artists Vladimir Mihaylov, Orlin Pavlov, Vesela Delcheva, Plamen Dimov-Grandzhan, Veniamin Dimitor, Georgi Dzhanov, Georgi Arsov, Vesela Yaneva and others. The “Les Misérables” has been performed for over thirty years, all over the world, with an audience of over 120 million in 52 countries, performed in 22 languages.

The ”Opera at the Square” festival will close on the 8th of August, 21:00, with a grand performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth symphony. Conductor will be the world-renowned Maestro Daniel Oren. Vocals: Jessica Pratt, Violeta Radomirska, Gregory Kunde and Alexandar Vinogradov. The performance is dedicated to the 240th anniversary of the creation of “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller.

On the 11th of July, the sixth edition of the “Muses on the Water” will begin, on an open stage at Pancharevo Lake. Throughout the festival, viewers will be able to see the “Swan Lake” ballet, “Romeo and Juliet” as well as the “Mamma Mia!” musical.
