The Valkyrie is a Scandinavian mythology figure depicted as a female warrior riding a steed, a wolf or a boar and armed with a spear.
The Valkyries all answer to Odin: the chief god of the Germans, ruler of the sky and of justice and war. They take part in determining the victorious outcomes of battles and decide who lives and who dies during them. The Valkyries take the brave defeated warriors to Valhalla: the hall of the fallen.
In the Iceland “Njáls saga”, the “Song of the Valkyries” (or “The Song of Deruda) has survived to this day, ever since the time of the famous battle at Clontarf (1014) between the Irish and Scandinavian vikings.
One of the most famous pieces in “Die Walküre”: “The Ride of the Valkyries”, became widely popular through Francis Ford Coppola’s epic film “Apocalypse Now” (1979).
“Die Walküre” was performed for the first time in Bulgaria on 14.01.2011 in Sofia with conductor Pavel Balev and director Plamen Kartaloff.
