THE SOFIA WAGNER FESTIVAL NOMINATED FOR FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR AT THE PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL OPERA AWARDS

A landmark recognition for Sofia Opera and Ballet and Bulgarian operatic art

The Sofia Wagner Festival has been shortlisted for the prestigious International Opera Awards in the "Opera Festival" category. The nomination is an international recognition of Sofia Opera and Ballet’s artistic vision and its unwavering commitment to presenting the works of Richard Wagner, as well as of Bulgaria’s significant place in the global opera community.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on 21 November 2026 at the historic MusikTheater an der Wien. The ceremony will be broadcast live by OperaVision.

Sofia – A Magnet for Wagner Enthusiasts

Sofia Opera and Ballet has built an impressive Wagner repertoire, establishing itself as a recognised international centre for interpreting the works of the great German composer. Its landmark productions include the Ring of the Nibelung — presented in two productions 2013 and 2023 based on entirely different interpretations — as well as Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal, The Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin and Tannhäuser.

A particular strength of these productions is the leading participation of Bulgarian singers, whose talent and professionalism testify to the high standard of the Bulgarian opera tradition. Sofia Opera’s Wagner productions have been presented at six international venues in Germany, Russia and Italy, as well as at prestigious festivals in Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Belarus and North Macedonia.
The Wagber Festival attracts audiences to Sofia from Europe, Australia, North and South America, China and South Africa. This international interest confirms Sofia’s importance as a cultural destination for Wagner enthusiasts and strengthens Bulgaria’s presence on the global opera map.

A New Wagnerian Milestone: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

The Wagner Festival’s next major challenge is the premiere of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg), scheduled for 28 May 2027. The work will be presented in Giacomo Puccini’s historic Italian reduced version, associated with the production staged at Teatro alla Scala di Milano in 1889.
The premiere will be the highlight of the Wagner Festival from 28 May to 3 July 2027. The programme will once again include the Ring of the Nibelung — one of Sofia Opera’s landmark achievements.
