The world-famous Mikhail Baryshnikov will be guest on the stage of the Sofia Opera and Ballet

On 19 and 20 January 2019 the famous Russian and American ballet dancer, choreographer and actor Mikhail Nikolayevich Baryshnikov will be guest on the stage of the Sofia Opera and Ballet with his exceptional production “Brodsky / Baryshnikov”. “This spectacle is an important moment in my life – a transition from the ballet play to the theatre” – shared Baryshnikov in a number of American magazines and newspapers. The one-man show has toured since 2015 the world stages, and the tickets for it are being sold for several hours.

Stage director of the spectacle is Alvis Hermanis. The sets of the performance seem like a fascinating winter garden, in which Baryshnikov recites verses by his friend the Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky, with whom they went through the emigrant years in the USA. Mikhail transfers in a unique way with voice and plastic movements Brodsky’s poetry.

The spectacle will be performed in Russian with supertitles in Bulgarian and its duration is one hour and thirty minutes.

The name of Mikhail Baryshnikov is cited alongside these of Rudolf Nureyev and Vladimir Vasiliev as one of the greatest ballet dancers in the history.

After the promising start in the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, at the end of a tour in Toronto in 1974, Baryshnikov stayed in Canada. At first, he was freelancer in many companies, and later he joined the New York City Ballet, in order to master the style of George Balanchine. After that he danced with the American Ballet Theatre, where later he became artistic director.

He has spearheaded many of his own artistic projects and has been associated in particular with promoting modern dance. Besides turning into the most widely known modern dancer, he has also many successes in the theatre, the cinema and the television.

In 1977, he received a nomination for Oscar Award for best actor of a secondary role and Golden Globe nomination for his role of Yuri Kopeikine in the film “The Turning Point”. He also had a significant role also in the last season of the television series “Sex and the City” and starred in the movie “White Nights” with Gregory Hines, Helen Mirren and Isabella Rosselini.
