All playing and singing Rachmaninoff

A series of concerts dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff begins in Bulgaria.

On 31 March at Bulgaria Hall, the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Kadin presents a concert featuring the composer's famous Symphonic Dances and the symphonic fantasy “The Rock”. Also included in the concert is a unique work by Rachmaninoff – a rhapsody on a theme by Paganini, written for piano and orchestra, whose soloist will be the young Russian pianist Andrei Gugnin. The work is inspired by the music of Gershwin, with whom Rachmaninoff became acquainted during one of his visits in the USA.

Two evenings at the Sofia Opera are dedicated to Rachmaninoff's romances – on 1 and 22 April. The performance is called "Rachmaninov Speaks" and in it the soprano Tsvetana Bandalovska will perform some not so popular, but significant for the composer song works accompanied by the piano of Blagovesta Konstantinova.

The concerts, which will take place in the opera's chamber hall, will also feature the actor Teodor Georgiev, who will read excerpts from the composer's letters written during the years of the music's creation.
