Biography

Turkish tenor Mert Süngü is recognized for his interpretations of the bel canto repertoire and the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

 

 

Mert Süngü graduated from Mimar Sinan University and continued his studies at the Scuola dell'Opera ItaIiana (S.O.I.) of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. He subsequently began his international career as a soloist at the Semperoper Dresden.

 

 

Recent highlights include Leicester in Elisabetta, regina d'lnghilterra (Gioachino Rossini) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo;the title role in Roberto Devereux (Gaetano Donizetti) at the Grand Theatre de Geneve; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (Wolfgang  Amadeus Mozart) at the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet; and Pollione in Norma (Vincenzo Bellini) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro Verdi di Salerno.

 

 

He has appeared on major international stages including Teatro deii'Opera di Roma, Teatro di San Carlo,Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Fondazione Arena di Verona, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Theatre du Chatelet, Opera National  de Lyon, Opera national de Montpellier, Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse and Festival d'Aix-en-Provence; in Germany at Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Staatsoper  Stuttgart; as well as at Grand Theatre de Geneve, Volksoper Wien and Opera Royal de Wallonie. His international appearances also include Melbourne, Chile, the Bolshoi Theatre and Tokyo.

 

 

He has collaborated with conductors such as Fabio Luisi, Christian Thielemann, Michele Mariotti, Marc Minkowski, Daniele Rustioni, Lorenzo Viotti, Diego Fasolis and Orner Meir Wellber; and with directors including Graham Vick, Damiano Michieletto, Willy Decker, Davide Livermore, Tobias Kratzer and Franco Zeffirelli.

 

 

His performances have been broadcast by RAI, ARD, ORF and ARTE, and his recordings have been released by labels including Decca Records, Naxos Records, Dynamic and Bongiovanni. In the coming months, he will perform in concerts with the MUnchner Symphoniker; appear as Prince Ramiro in La Cenerentola (Gioachino Rossini) with Opera Queensland; perform Camille in La Vedova Allegra (Franz Lehar); and present II pianto delle muse in morte di Lord Byron at Teatro Fraschini. His new recording Masaniello will be released by Naxos Records in September 2026.
