Federico Battista Melis

Biography

Born in Cagliari, Sardinia, pianist Federico Battista Melis began studying music at the age of five, learning the organ and piano. He graduated with honours and special mention from the Conservatory of Cagliari under the guidance of Gabriella Mereu, and went on to study at the Music Academy of Pinerolo with Benedetto Lupo.

Afterwards he attended the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland with Sandro D'Onofrio and Galina Vracheva, obtaining a Master's degree in Music Pedagogy and two postgraduate qualifications in Music Performance and Concert Improvisation.

As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in numerous venues such as the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Bösendorfer-Saal (Salzburg), LAC of Lugano, Vatican Museums (Rome), Palazzo Regio and Auditorium in Cagliari, Teatro Verdi (Sassari), Teatro DIM (Verona), Sala del Circolo Italiano in Lausanne, Kammermusiksaal del ZHDK (Zurich) and others.

He has also performed as an orchestral musician at the LAC (Lugano), Teatro Goldoni (Venice), Teatro Valli (Reggio Emilia), Auditorio Stelio Moro (Radio RSI). In 2024, he represented the Canton of Ticino (Switzerland) as a member of the Junior Jury of the renowned Geza Anda competition, alongside the Senior Jury chaired by Riccardo Castro and Marta Argerich.

Federico has always paid particular attention to chamber music and improvisation, playing in various ensembles – Trio Capusar, Trio Faldan, Impros and Duo Motum – with which he regularly performs in concert series in Italy and abroad.

He is currently a piano teacher at the MAT Art Centre in Lugano (Switzerland), the Music Training Centre in Gavirate (Italy), and is an artist for the Spirio project for Steinway & Sons, for which he made several solo recordings.
