Vesela Delcheva: “It’s been a happy eight years with “Mamma Mia!”

The musical based on ABBA’s music returns to the Sofia Opera and Ballet stage

16th of June, 2026

Vesela Delcheva, one of the contemporary Bulgarian musical stars, was a guest on the “Sabotno kafe” show regarding the upcoming performances of the cult musical “Mamma Mia!”. The title returns to the Sofia Opera and Ballet stage with eight new performances: from the 20th till the 28th of June. Performing the main role of Sophie Sheridan, Vesela has starred over 150 times in “Mamma Mia!”

“Mamma Mia!” was born in 2018 and it’s been a happy eight years during which we have managed to recreate this truly iconic musical”, she said. After many tours around the country and dozens of performances, the musical returns to the Sofia Opera along with ABBA’s hits: favorites of many generations.

“This musical’s inception was in London, 1999. Later, the movie starring Meryl Streep came out (2008). However, our take on the musical isn’t a replica as is done in most theaters around the world. It has an entirely new directorship, scenography, lighting, dances and our different interpretations of the characters.”

Vesela Delcheva underlines that during the past eight years, the team has managed to remain almost the same, with some new recent arrivals. Vladi Mihaylov, Ludmila Kozareva, Edelina Kaneva, Radoslav Vladimirov, Georgi Arsov, Silvana Pravcheva, Alexandar Georgiev, Simeon Vladov, Nikolay Pavlov, Boyan Arsov and “all our other wonderful colleagues who I love very much” continue to be a part of the production.

Belcheva shares she loves working while fully dedicated and that every obstacle on stage can be overcome with more rehearsals. Being a musical artist means knowing how to sing, dances and act at the same time but to her this is “My personal happiness: I love my job very much and I devote all my energy to it. I hope I meet the audience’s expectations!”
