This year’s edition of “Opera at the Square” festival will close with a performance of the opera “Turandot”. This performance is dedicated to three iconic anniversaries, in addition to being the cultural event finale.
“The 100th anniversary of the premiere of “Turandot” at La Scala, the 85th anniversary of the legendary opera singer Gena Dimitrova’s birth who is dubbed “Turandot” of the century, and the 31st anniversary of the Sofia Opera production of “Turandot”, created especially for her”, prof. Plamen Kartaloff, director of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, creator of the “Opera at the Square” festival as well as many other summer open stage festivals, said.
“In order to make progress in these projects of mine, I dedicated more than forty years of my life to making the art of opera come alive in a new way: on open stages. And here we are: through our own philosophy and the Sofia Opera’s initiatives, many new festival stages were born in Bulgaria. My belief that new open stages and unusual opera environment attract the interest of an entirely new audience was proven to be true. The main thing, however, isn’t just bringing both classic and contemporary scores to life but also taking care of one’s audience, now and in the future”, he added.
In the span of one month, the “Opera at the Square” festival offered twelve performances to the audience’s attention. The festival’s official closing will take place tomorrow evening, at 8pm, at the stage in front of the “St. Alexander Nevsky” cathedral.
