A long-awaited event for the Sofia Opera ballet. This night, the troupe will present the premiere of the ballet “Pride and Prejudice” by choreographer Leo Mujic. Tickets for all premiere dates were sold out weeks ago.

With the very first performance of “Anna Karenina”, Leo Mujic proved he knows how to make hit ballet productions. He repeated his success with the ballet version of the “The Great Gatsby” novel and now expectations for his third premiere in Sofia are astronomically high.

Leo Mujic: “This is the biggest ballet production I’ve set so far. The scale of this ballet is huge. I believe there are 65 dancers on the stage at the same time; to be honest, I think the audience will have to come see the ballet more than once in order to comprehend it fully. This is a novel in which nobody dies; the protagonists just wish to marry and that’s why the group scenes are very important: here, the troupe carries the story and the soloists throughout the story.”

Leo Mujic is a very demanding creator but admits the Sofia Opera has three world-famous prima ballerinas: Marta Petkova, Katerina Petrova and Boryana Petrova. It is exactly because of their talent that he perhaps chose to tell this literary story through a ballet.  

Marta Petkova: “Through Mujic, I discovered a new approach; I found out there are no limits to our art, that you can always want more and that the choreographer can give you thousands of opportunities.”

Frederico Pinto will take on the role of the stiff and dark Mr. Darcy. Initially, he wasn’t sure he liked the role but now he’s confident this ballet will also reap success.

Frederico Pinto: “I believe the success of this performance lies in the message it carries: never judge before you try to understand the other person’s point of view.”

The Sofia Opera ballet troupe awaits the premiere performances with excitement and the artists are convinced the new performance will win the audience’s hearts, just as it has already conquered the hearts of the ballet dancers.
