AMERICAN BALLET FOR BULGARIA IS COMING BACK IN JUNE WITH THE STARS OF TOM GOLD DANCE

Prima ballerinas, premier soloists of some of the greatest ballet companies in the world, New York City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet, will arrive in our country in the frames of the fourth edition of American ballet for Bulgaria. This year the cycle will be presented by Tom Gold – an indicative name in the world choreography and founder of the dance company Tom Gold Dance. The stars of Tom Gold Dance will dance on the stage of Sofia Opera and Ballet at the invitation of American ballet for Bulgaria, edition IV.
 
 
On 20, 21 and 22 June will take place the fourth edition of American ballet for Bulgaria. This year the cycle is entitled Tom Gold Dance and it presents the company of Tom Gold, a world-known ballet dancer and choreographer. The dancers from Tom Gold Dance will perform five ballets at Sofia Opera and Ballet with the special participation of its primas. The stars of the spectacles are Maria Kowroski – prima ballerina and Savannah Lowery – soloist of New York City Ballet, Carla Körbes – prima ballerina and Seth Orza, premier soloist of Pacific Northwest Ballet, and the primas of Sofia Opera and Ballet Marta Petkova and Katerina Petrova.
Tom Gold is an indicative name in the world choreography, ex-soloist of New York City Ballet in the last 21 years, performer of leading roles in choreographies by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and William Forsyhte. 15 years ago Tom Gold founded his own ballet company – Tom Gold Dance, which will be guest-performer in June with its greatest stars.
The fourth edition of American ballet for Bulgaria will produce on the stage of Sofia Opera and Ballet three spectacles in three consecutive days – 20, 21 and 22 June, each one of which consists of five ballets:
 
Apollo
Ballet by George Balanchine after music by Igor Stravinsky, produced for the first time in One year later, the costumes for Apollo were made by Coco Chanel herself.  The ballet’s history recreates the myth about Apollo and the three muses, in the roles of which will enter the primas of Sofia Opera and Ballet Marta Petkova and Katerina Petrova, together with the prima of New York City Ballet Maria Kowroski and the premier soloist from Pacific Northwest Ballet Seth Orza.

Gershwin Preludes
Ballet after music by George Gershwin and choreography by Tom Gold, which will transport the audience in the golden time of jazz with the means of expression of classical ballet. With the special participation of two Bulgarian musicians (violin and piano) from the orchestra of Sofia Opera and Ballet.

Concertino
Music by Igor Stravinsky, choreography by Jerome Robbins. A modern ballet, which uses neoclassical techniques of expression.
Junk Duet
Music by Donald Knaack, choreography by Twyla Tharp in the specific style of the famous choreographer, which mixes classical ballet and free movements. Twyla Tharp has worked together with names like Miloš Forman, David Byrne, Mikhail Baryshnikov. Author of 160 dance works of art, Tharp is bearer of the Tony Award, two Emmy Awards and more than 200 awards, including National Medal of Arts and Jerome Robbins Award, as well as Lifetime Achievement Award of last year’s edition of Tribeca Film Festival.

La Plage
Ballet after choreography by Tom Gold and music by John Zorn – an avant-garde multi-instrumentalist, saxophonist, inducted into the Hall of Fame by Lou Reed.

The extraordinary spectacle, presenting five ballets by the choreographers George Balanchine, Tom Gold, Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp, will be produced on 20, 21 and 22 June by Tom Gold’s Ballet company at Sofia Opera and Ballet with the special participation of its primas.

After three exceptionally strong seasons of the cycle American ballet for Bulgaria, which presented the work of the phenomenal choreographer of the XXth century George Balanchine and his last muse Suzanne Farrell, Kathryn Posin, known to us with the ballets Stepping Stones and Scheherazade, bearer of several Tony Awards and Oscar Award Jerome Robbins, and William Forsyhte – the choreographer, whose vision turned classical ballet into modern art, this year American ballet for Bulgaria will add to its selection one more indicative name in the American and world choreography – Tom Gold.
 
American ballet for Bulgaria takes place under the aegis of America for Bulgaria Foundation. The programme is directed towards the turning of the dance and ballet art into an effective instrument for cultural diplomacy, towards the bringing back of young people in the halls of the ballet theatres, the enrichment of the panoply of professional ballet in Bulgaria and the restoration of the prestige of the Bulgarian ballet tradition. In long-term plan “American ballet for Bulgaria” is aiming at the formation of creative environment, where the cultural differences will be no obstacle, but a prerequisite for beneficial cooperation between artists from different schools and generations.
