On 27, 28 and 29 June at 21.00 h the audience of Sofia Opera and the guests of the capital will have the chance to experience together in the open air and for the first time in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral the masterpiece of Russian classic, the opera “Boris Godunov” by Modest Mussorgsky. The spectacular project is a new idea of the director Plamen Kartaloff with the participation of the soloists, the orchestra, the chorus, the production and technical services of Sofia Opera. Specially for the spectacles in front of the historical temple will be built up a huge stage and tribunes for the audience with 1 400 seats.
The production in the open air of “Boris Godunov” is an important part of the cultural programme of the capital and with it will be festively celebrated three significant anniversaries. On 18 May 2014 the world will mark the 100th Anniversary of the famous bass Boris Christoff, but together with it we are dedicating the production also to the 85th Anniversary of Nicolai Ghiaurov, both of them world-renowned with their recreation of the role of Boris Godunov.
In 2014 have elapsed also 90 years since the sanctification of the patriarchal St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The marking of the three anniversaries with this unique project promises to turn into a real feast for the admirers of the art of opera, reach with its traditions and acknowledged all over the world. The production of “Boris Godunov” under the starry sky of Sofia will attract many tourists from abroad, for which Sofia Opera is one of the brightest symbols of our contemporary culture. In the new production in the open air the main role will be performed by Svetozar Rangelov and Martin Tsonev. Conductor will be Konstantin Chudovski.
The tickets for the production of “Boris Godunov” in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, at prices of BGN 10,- to 100,- are released since 3 April. You could purchase them from the Ticket office of Sofia Opera and Ballet (1, Vrabcha Str.), online through the web site www.operasofia.bg and in the distribution net of Eventim.
The project is under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Sofia Municipality and is being realized thanks to United Bulgarian Bank and “Sopharma”.
The production of the opera “Boris Godunov” by Mussorgsky is in support of the candidature of Sofia and the Southwest region for European capital of culture in 2019.
