The idea of the Director of the Sofia Opera is to invite significant names from different generations of artists, who have created, followed and at the moment are developing the traditions of Bulgaria’s world and national opera theatre.
Having conquered the highest summit of Bel Canto, the Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov with his powerful voice and imposing example, has never forgotten that he had begun with his first steps and his first role on the stage of the Sofia Opera.
During the international jury, of which Plamen Kartaloff was one of its members, he met the American mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, called by the New York Times one of the most majestic voices of the opera. He invited her right away to be guest at the Sofia Opera, because he knew that in 1991, in San Francisco, together with Ghiaurov, she took part in the production of “Khovanshchina” by Mussorgsky.
For the 90th anniversary, dedicated to Ghiaurov’s jubilee, she can perform the prophetical aria of Marfa, one of the lead characters, as performer, who was partner of the great bass in this spectacle. This way the Bulgarian music lovers too will hear live and for the first time the soloist of many years of the Metropolitan Opera and not only of it, but also of the largest opera stages, including La Scala, the Salzburg Festival, the Chicago Opera Theater, Arena di Verona, the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, Teatro Real de Madrid, etc.
Her vast repertoire includes different composition schools: Verdi, Wagner, Mascagni, Saint-Saëns, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Bellini, Prokofiev, Massenet, Dvořák. She is as well a well-known performer of new music by contemporary authors. Dolora Zajick has also composed one opera by herself, "Roads to Zion", as well as the big chorus work "Birdsong". In her career of many years, she has worked with the conductors James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, etc.
Dolora Zajick dedicates a part of her time to the improvement of young opera singers. In order to give valuable advices to the youngest artists from the Sofia Opera, Plamen Kartaloff convinced her to give a master class. Immediately after the concert, ten selected singers will have the privilege to get in touch with the great art of Dolora Zajick, one of the greatest opera artists in the world.
