Yasen Valchanov at 60 – Celebration with the spectacle “La Dame aux Camélias” on 26 May

He has graduated from the Vaganova St. Petersburg Academic Choreographic School in 1977 and is a graduate in Ballet pedagogy from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv in 2002.

Lecturer at the National School of Dance Art and at the New Bulgarian University, where he held master classes. Associate professor at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts – Stage Movement Department – where he teaches Classical dance technique and was supervisor of the 2009, 2013 and 2017 classes. Premier soloist of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, and since 1993 he has been pedagogue and coach there. He was Artistic director of the ballet company of the Opera from 1993 to 1995 and from 1998 to 2000.

Yasen Valchanov has performed over 100 roles in the classic, neoclassic and modern repertoire:

  • Basilio from “Don Quixote”

  • Alfredo from “La Dame aux Camélias”
  • The Prodigal Son from “Who Cares”

and others.

He has worked with the choreographers Yury Grigorovich, Pierre Lacotte, Joseph Lazzini, Serge Lifar, Vladimir Skuratov, Petar Lukanov, Margarita Arnaudova, Asen Gavrilov, Ferenc Barbay, Antal Fodor, Dmitry Bryantsev, Alberto Alonso, Lorca Massine, Boryana Sechanova, Donvena Pandoursky, Hikmet Mehmedov, etc.

He has taken part in spectacles in Monte Carlo, Bordeaux, Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Budapest, Zagreb, Skopje, Nafsika Ballet – Athens, Ochi Ballet – Osaka, Tomoi Ballet – Tokyo, Balletto del Sud – Italy, as well as in many gala concerts all over the world.

Yasen Valchanov was member of the jury of the ballet competitions in:

He was President of the jury of the Anastas Petrov National Ballet Competition in Dobrich in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
